Anonymous Prepares for Million Mask March Amid KKK Reveals

The group Anonymous has already been in the news this week with the revealed email addresses and phone numbers of alleged Ku Klux Klan members. But the best – or at least the rest – is yet to come, depending on your point of view toward Anonymous’ activity. On Nov. 5, Guy Fawkes Night, Anonymous has stated it will release at least the names of 1,000 alleged members of the KKK and there is the planned Million Mask March.

What Is Anonymous?

What Is the Relationship Between Anonymous and the Ku Klux Klan?

The group Anonymous became interested in the white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan during 2014 when Ferguson, MO. Was the site of multiple protests over the death of a male black teen who had been shot by a white police officer in the community. Anonymous became involved when the KKK threatened “lethal” force against peaceful protesters in Ferguson, who the Ku Klux Klan referred to as “terrorists.”

Just recently a spokesperson for the group Anonymous made a public statement explaining that this group would be revealing what it has learned through its hacking activities as to the alleged members of the KKK and would be revealing at least 1,000 names of individuals by Nov. 5

An early release of 57 email addresses and 23 phone numbers of alleged Klan members was initially credited to Anonymous, but the group is denying it released that information.

What Is Guy Fawkes Night and What Does It Have to do with Anonymous?

Guy Fawkes Celebration in England 2014

On Nov. 5, Britain has traditionally celebrated Guy Fawkes Night, a night to celebrate that the would-be revolutionist, Guy Fawkes, failed in his group’s plan to obliterate Parliament with barrels of gunpowder in 1605. An anonymous letter sent warning of the important not to overlook the House of Lords led to the discovery of the explosive expert, Guy Fawkes, in the basement of that building, waiting to light the fuse. The plan was thwarted, Fawkes arrested and tortured to provide the names of his co-conspirators. Parliament then named Nov. 5 as a day of thanksgiving.

The group Anonymous has as their identifying feature a Guy Fawkes mask. Exactly what the symbolism is to the group is unclear, although perhaps it is because Anonymous members feel they are pursuing a path they believe, as did Fawkes and his group.

Million Mask March 2015

It has become an annual observance of the group to encourage others who think as they do and/or support the group’s efforts and activities to join together on Guy Fawkes Night for what the group terms the Million Mask March where Anonymous plans a network of events around the world to advance its causes.
