Daniel Holtzclaw, 29, former lieutenant with the Oklahoma City Police Department, found guilty on 18 of 36 counts of charges including stalking, burglary, sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy and rape late on Thursday, December 10, 2015, has been placed on a 24-hour watch in the Oklahoma County Jail.
Holtzclaw’s emotional reaction to the jury’s verdict – rocking in his chair and crying – is the basis for the 24-hour watch. The ex-cop is said to be in a single cell with a jailer watching over him around the clock. When Holtzclaw returns to court on January 21, 2016 for sentencing, he faces a prison term of up to 263 years.
Thirteen women, all of whom were black, accused Holtzclaw of abusing his power as a police officer to force them into sexual acts, from groping of them and forcing to expose themselves to him up to, and including, rape while he was on duty. The first report was made in 2014 by a 50+ year-old black woman; more reports followed. Hotlzclaw was relieved of duty when charges were then filed against him that same year.
CNN.com reported that KFOR had obtained a copy of the former cop’s termination letter from the Oklahoma City Police department, that said in part, “The greatest abuse of police authority I have witnessed in my 37 years as a member of this agency, ” in regards to the allegations brought by the women against him.
The undertones of race, both in Holtzclaw’s crimes – he a man of white and Asian decent – his victims all black women – and in the trial itself when an all-white jury was seated to hear the case could not be denied. Jurors deliberated for four days before reaching their verdicts.
Hotlzclaw chose as his victims black women who had histories of criminal activity or active warrants – except the 50+ year-old woman. The victims explained the former cop would threaten them with arrest on outstanding warrants or drug paraphernalia to coerce them into sexual acts with him.
