A women driving down Las Vegas Boulevard near the Paris Hotel and Casino and Planet Hollywood caused a fatal accident on the Las Vegas Strip. In addition to at least one fatality, an estimated 37 people were injured, some of them critically according to police and reports from witnesses on the scene.
The woman who caused the fatal accident on the Las Vegas Strip had a three-year old child in the car with her. Witnesses told reporters that the woman tried to flee the scene, but was detained by police a few blocks away. Police administered several tests to the driver, including a sobriety test.

According to CNN, authorities have determined that the woman intentionally drove into the crowd. In a press conference, a police spokesman said that the woman was from “out of the area” and may have been driving for a day before plowing her Oldsmobile into the crowd on the Las Vegas sidewalk. ABC News reported that the case has been turned over to the homicide division of the Las Vegas Police Department.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic with people scrambling to get out of the way of the moving vehicle. One witness told CNN, “She came to a stop at the Paris intersection, people are punching into the window … she accelerated again and just kept mowing people down.”
The Miss Universe pageant was being held at the same time inside Planet Hollywood. The winner was announced at nearly the same time as the accident occurred outside.
The Las Vegas Strip was closed overnight between Flamingo and Harmon. Witnesses described multiple flashing lights from police cars, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. The Strip will be closed until the investigation is complete.
The woman’s identity and other information will be added as it becomes available.
