The Long-Awaited Return of the X-Files to Television!

XFiles-Poster- return of the X-Files

The return of the X-Files to television, greatly anticipated by long-time fans, is coming on Jan. 24, 2016. (

Scully and Mulder are back for a six-episode return of the X-Files to television!  David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully after a 13 year hiatus.

The original X-Files series aired from 1993 to 2002 and two movies were also released.

The idea for a return of the X-Files came when Duchovny, Anderson, Carter and some of the former producers participated in a 2013 Comic-Con panel that was sponsored by TV Guide Magazine.   The audience was standing-room only and Carter recognized that there was still a demand for the show.  It took a while to pull it all together, but the long wait is finally over.

Chris Carter directed three of the episodes; former X-Files vets, Glen Morgan, Jim Wong and Darin Morgan, each wrote and directed one each.

Details Released About the Return of the X-Files

Producers have released a few glimpses of what we can expect from the X-Files revival.  The new twist asks the question:  What if it was the government, and not an alien life-form, that is behind some of the world’s biggest unexplained events?

In addition to David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), who supervises Mulder and Scully, is also returning. Other returning characters are FBI Special Agent Monica Reyes (Anabeth Gish) and Margaret Scully, Dana’s mother (Sheila Larkin).  In addition, series creator Chris Carter is back on board.

Fans can also expect a return of some popular characters from the past including Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) and the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Bruce Harwood and Dean Haglund).  The Cigarette Smoking Man will come “back from the dead,” and his failure to die will be explained.  The Lone Gunmen will return, but they will not be alive.  They will come back as part of a fantasy.

Story Line of the New X-Files Series

The new series will begin and end with two conspiracy episodes, and there will be four “monster of the week” episodes in the middle.  Here are the titles of the first three episodes: “The Struggle,” “Founder’s Mutation,” and “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster.”

Although there will only be six episodes in this miniseries, there will be unresolved issues at the end, leaving the door open for another miniseries in the future.

How Fans Can Prepare for the Return of the X-Files

What kind of homework could you do to prepare for this reboot of X-Files?  Chris Carter released some clues about topics you may want to investigate before watching the series:

Free energy: The theory that there is a source of low-cost energy being suppressed by investors in fossil fuels.

Edward Snowden: The revelation that the government has abused its ability to spy on citizens.

Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Save the World: A book by Paul Stamets

New psychedelic drug research: Are there therapeutic uses for these drugs, including psilocybin?

The Thrive Movement: A conspiracy website.  Chris Carter said he found a few of the conspiracies on this site quite plausible and good fodder for Scully and Mulder.

My Struggle:  A six-book series by Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard

CRISPR-CAS9: A new genetic technique that can permanently alter DNA in a way that even changes the DNA that parents pass on to their offspring, possibly changing human life in the future.  It’s real!

Joel McHale’s 2014 White House Corrrespondents’ Dinner Speech: This man’s speech inspired some of Carter’s ideas for the new series.

Check out some of the concepts above, and you will be ready for the return of the X-Files to television.
