The BBC has confirmed that Steven Moffat will step down from producing Doctor Who, with his last season airing in 2017. He will be replaced by Chris Chibnall, who currently producers Broadchurch.
Moffat has been executively producing the show since 2010, seeing the introduction of Matt Smith’s and Peter Capaldi’s Doctors (numbers 11 and 12). He was also responsible for the War Doctor played by John Hurt, as well as introducing the most recent companions Amy Pond, Rory Williams and Clara Oswald, played by Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Jenna Coleman respectively.
In an interview, Moffat admitted that it had taken “ a lot of gin and tonic” to get the Broadchurch showrunner to agree to take on this new show. However, he was “beyond delighted” that Doctor Who w ould be continued forward by a major British television drama producer.
This has come to a shock to many fans, although there are some mixed reviews over his departure announcement. Fans will have another season worth of material, along with two Christmas specials. The 10th season will be the last, which will air in the spring of 2017 and there will be a Christmas special after that.
Chibnall explained that he is looking forward to taking on Doctor Who as his next project, especially since it is such a major program for the BBC. This was a show he grew up enjoying, and he looked forward to creating new creatures, worlds and characters. The benefit of a series like Doctor Who is that only the imagination limits the possibilities.
Moffat still has a lot of work to do. He needs to introduce a new companion for The Doctor, after Clara died and was then brought back between heartbeats in the last season. The Doctor’s memories of Clara have been wiped clean. Most fans are eagerly anticipating the announcement of the actor who will become the next companion.
