On February 1, 1587, Elizabeth I signed a death warrant that would have serious implications for a former Scottish queen. What else happened in history today?
1327: Coronation of Edward III of England
England had only recently seen a change to the monarchy, and not due to a death. Edward III had deposed his father Edward II on January 24. It took a week for his coronation to take place; many other monarchs could wait weeks or months for a coronation. The quick process helped to cement the idea for the people that there was a new king. Edward III went on to rule for 50 years and is still one of the longest reigning monarchs for the country.
1587: Elizabeth I Signs Mary, Queen of Scots’ Death Warrant
On this day in history, Elizabeth I made the decision to sign the death warrant for Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was not just a former queen, but Elizabeth’s cousin, claimant to the English throne and looking for safety when she crossed into England almost 20 years earlier. Instead of refuge, Elizabeth locked her away. Mary was found conspiring with Catholics to depose Elizabeth and take the throne for herself, but it is unclear whether she was set up, really guilty or really wanted to depose her cousin. While Elizabeth has signed the warrant, she made it clear that she never wanted her cousin executed. Unfortunately, with the signing of the warrant, Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed a week later.
1884: Debuting the Oxford Dictionary
The Oxford Dictionary remains an important book in schools in English-speaking countries, especially Britain. It was on February 1 that the dictionary was originally debuted. The dictionary was the first accurate and comprehensive English language dictionary of the day, and defined the meanings, history and pronunciation of all the words used at the time and in the past. It has since grown, as language has developed over the years to the point where there are now 59 million words.
