While the recreational use of marijuana has not been legalized in California, medical marijuana is permitted with a physician’s prescription. Consequently, Roseanne Barr has announced that she has invested in a medical marijuana dispensary in Santa Ana, CA. She plans to call it Roseanne’s Joint.
The 63-year-old comedian revealed last year that she smokes medical marijuana to treat her glaucoma and macular degeneration. Ms. Barr said, “It’s good for me for that, because I have pressure in my eyes.” She added that medical marijuana is “good medicine for a lot of things.”
According to one of her dispensary partners, Aaron Herzberg, she will provide some unique products at their business, including chocolate covered marijuana-laced macadamia nuts which have been grown on her own farm in Hawaii. Mr. Herzberg will operate the dispensary, but Ms. Barr will make occasional appearances there. Mr. Herzberg and Ms. Barr became friends when he was her attorney a few years ago.
Herzberg told The Orange County Register, “We think it will bring credibility and a good name and frankly, good values. But we also hope that it will create within the community a sense that marijuana is here to stay in California, that it’s getting legitimized and that serious names are coming to the table.”
Rosanne Barr will be an investor and have a licensing agreement with the dispensary. Her medical marijuana dispensary is one of only 20 that won a city lottery last year, allowing it to apply to operate in Santa Ana.
In a statement to the press, Ms. Barr said, “I’m proud to be a cultural pioneer at the forefront of another wave of progress! And we’re proud of the city of Santa Ana as we continue to move into the era of recognizing cannabis as the natural, therapeutic, herbal substance medical science has proven it to be. Roseanne’s Joint will be a responsible, contributing member of, and addition to, the community.”
Other celebrities who have been investing in the medical marijuana industry include rapper B-Real, actor Woody Harrelson, actor Tommy Chong, rapper Snoop Dogg, and the family of Bob Marley.
Construction on Roseanne’s Joint will be completed in late April, 2016, and it should open shortly thereafter. According to Commander Chris Revere, a spokesman with the Santa Ana Police Department, the medical marijuana dispensary will be located at 1327 E. St. Gertrude Place in Santa Ana, CA.
