Pope Francis has inserted his own opinion into the American presidential campaign as he declared that Donald Trump’s solution to illegal immigration by building a wall along the US and Mexican border is “not Christian.”
Donald Trump angrily fired back at Pope Francis stating how disgraceful it was for a religious leader to question another person’s faith.
Pope Francis’ comments about Trump were released just hours after he finished his visit to Mexico. During the visit, he prayed for the people who have been killed trying to get across the border to the United States.
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” he said. Francis did say he would “give the benefit of the doubt” because he had not heard independently about the plans he did add, “I say only that this man is not a Christian if he has said things like that.”
Donald Trump, a Presbyterian as well as the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination, responded to what Pope Francis said within minutes.
“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful,” he said during a campaign stop in South Carolina. “I am proud to be a Christian, and as president I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened.”
In the video below, Trump went on to say that if and when the day comes that ISIS attacks the Vatican the Pope will wish he was President. You can see all of the exchanges between the two in the video below.
