It was at 8:52AM that Boone County sheriff’s deputies were called to home the of Raymond Giehll III to find his wife and 4-year-old son had been shot and killed.
Earlier in the morning, Katherine texted her husband to inform him that Lucius Oliver Hamilton III, her uncle, was at the home. Raymond had tried calling his wife, but was not able to get in touch with her. He used an application on his phone to access the surveillance system in their home. He was able to see the uncle, but he could not see his wife or his son. After several more attempts to call his wife with no luck, he rushed home to find her lying on the floor near the front door. Her son was lying near the television. His wife had been shot three times and his son had been shot once.
It did not take long for police to zone in on her uncle as the suspect after watching the surveillance footage that was captured that morning.
“In my 32 years of law enforcement I have never witnessed a crime so heinous and heartbreaking,” Boone County Sheriff Michael Nielsen said.
Giehll’s father, Russell Hamilton, had been a reserve officer for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for nearly 30 years.
“She’s been my best friend for almost 20 years,” a friend, Pamela Brown, sad. “She’s my sister. Little Ray was an amazing little boy. I have lost a part of my heart. Katie is and will always be an amazing person.”
Why Did He Kill His Niece and Her Son?
Police believe money drove the uncle to murder his niece and her son. The theory is the man murdered them over the family trust which holds millions of dollars in it. Hamilton and Giehll descended from a very wealthy family. Back in 1934, Hamilton’s maternal grandfather purchased 155 acres of land in Central Indiana and then built a manor home that was 10,000 square-feet in size on the land he had purchased.
