The CarMax salesman killed in accident near the Ontario, CA showroom where he worked has been identified as 43 year-old Warren Smale of Montclair. The Ontario police have arrested 28 year-old Alex Demetro, the driver of the Corvette that had been taken on a test drive. Mr. Demetro was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs.
The wrecked car and the arrest of the driver are both shown in the photo below.
Mr. Smale was transported to San Antonio Community Hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead later in the day. Mr. Demetro was also transported to a hospital and treated for his injuries, which were not severe. He was then taken to the San Bernardino County jail where he was held on $100,000 bail.
According to witnesses, Mr. Demetro had been driving the Corvette at a high rate of speed prior to losing control and crashing into a tree at Mercedes Lane near Concourse Street around lunchtime on February 23, 2016.
Warren Smale’s co-workers had high praise for him, saying that he was a consistently positive person. They also expressed shock over the circumstances of his death, because so many of them have gone on test drives with prospective buyers. One co-worker said that it was a normal thing to do.
About fifty of Mr. Smale’s co-workers and friends gathered at the site of the crash to remember him; many of them also participated in a prayer circle:
