Kiera Larsen, a 10 year old girl from Lakeside, California, in San Diego County, instinctively rushed to push one-year-old Adison Jenkins and two-year-old Emma Jenkins aside when an SUV began to roll in reverse down the driveway towards the yard where the children were playing. She saved the toddlers, but the SUV pushed Kiera through a fence, killing her.
The 10 year old girl died while saving two toddlers from the rolling SUV. Kiera’s stepmother performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Kiera was then transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.
Officials did not explain why the 1999 Mercedes-Benz SUV began to roll backwards. The incident occurred on Monday, Feb. 22, at approximately 5:10 p.m.
Alissa Jenkins, the mother of the two toddlers who were saved by Kiera, told reporters, “She is truly a hero. She will forever be my kids’ guardian angel. She saved both my daughters’ lives. These are my two kids that I have and both of them could’ve been gone in an instant and she stepped in and took over and did what she knows best to do—and that’s to protect those around her.”
The mother went on to say that she and her fiance do not know how they will ever be able to repay her. She gave her up life to save the lives of the toddlers.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Kiera Larsen’s family to help pay for funeral expenses.
CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein told FOX5 that Kiera had died heroically, because she sacrificed herself to save those young children.
The police are planning to inspect the vehicle to see if they can determine if it malfunctioned or why this incident happened. The car was parked and not running. They are not sure how it slipped into neutral and began rolling.
