Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz blamed challenger Donald Trump on Friday for a recent National Enquirer article claiming Cruz cheated on his wife with different women on five seperate occasions. So far, only anonymous sources back Cruz’ accusation.

An August, 2015 New York Daily News article states “Industry insiders tell us Trump is “very close” with David Pecker, head of The National Enquirer.” An October 2015 article from New York magazine political gossip reporter Gabe Sherman states Trump and Pecker “have been friends for years. ‘They’re very close,’ said a source close to the Enquirer.” Sherman enlisted a nearly three year old tweet as support.

Cruz stated on his Facebook page, “I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go.”

Trump denied any connection to the National Enquirer article in a statement. “I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it.”

Lack of hard evidence hasn’t stopped influential voices within Republican grass roots circles from joining the anti-Trump onslaught. Breitbart columnist, talk radio host and Cruz loyalist Ben Shapiro insists as the first point in his article Five Things You Need To Know About #Cruzsexscandal that “Trump’s people have been pushing the story.”

Michael Savage, who has endorsed Trump, called upon him to “disavow this guy Pecker and the story” or Savage “may withdraw (his) support from anyone in this campaign.” Savage enjoys the sixth largest talk radio audience – at five million as of 2014, according to Talkers magazine.

Breitbart.com asserts an unnamed “Rubio ally” presented the alleged Cruz affairs in February, but “there was no way to verify the claims.” The Daily Beast claims “for months and months, anti-Cruz operatives have pitched a variety of #CruzSexScandal stories to a host of prominent national publications.”

The National Enquirer’s contentions remain unconfirmed. They came just days after a pro-Cruz PAC released nude photos of Trump’s wife, Melania. Cruz denies all responsibility.
