Several tragedies have struck The Bachelor cast members over the years, including several suicides, a plane crash and a paragliding accident. While it is not surprising for there to be a few deaths in any large group of people, it is difficult for fans to accept that people so young have died, especially as a result of their own actions. Learn more about the young people who lost their lives after being on the show.
Over the past few years, there have been a number of tragedies which have struck The Bachelor cast members. After so many seasons of The Bachelor franchise, most fans would expect that the young adults who were on the show would be affected by a few tragedies. This fact, however, does not make these events any less sad.
Erin Storm: Ultralight Plane Crash
One of the most recent deaths was that of Erin Storm who died in an ultralight plane crash in Hawthorne, California on Monday, March 21, 2016. Erin was 41 years old and a contestant on season 12 of The Bachelor with Matt Grant, in 2008. She was working as a pilot for Pacific Blue Air, a training facility, at the time of her death.
Several men who were working nearby witnessed the accident and ran to the burning plane. They pulled Storm out of the aircraft, and told reporters that Erin’s legs were on fire. According to the local NBC affiliate, she was in cardiac arrest by the time rescue crews arrived. She was transported to a trauma center where she was later pronounced dead.
Lex McAllister: Suicide
Lex McAllister was a contestant on season 14 of the show with Jake Pavelka. She may not be well-remembered because she was eliminated after the first week. In early February, 2016, police in Columbus, Ohio received a call from a woman who said that Lex had texted her earlier saying she wanted to “end her life.” When the friend went to check on Lex, it appeared that she had OD’d on prescription drugs. She was rushed to the hospital in stable condition, but died soon afterwards.
Gia Allemand: Suicide
Gia Allemand was also a contestant on Jake Pavelka’s season of The Bachelor. She actually was on the show much longer than Lex, but she, too, was eventually eliminated. Later, Gia also appeared on The Bachelor Pad.
Gia committed suicide by hanging herself in her New Orleans home, reportedly while on a phone call with her mother, after her boyfriend, NBA star Ryan Anderson, told her that he didn’t love her anymore. They had an argument earlier that day, during which she reportedly accused him of cheating on her. She died on August 14, 2013. Gia was 29 years old.
Julien Hug: Suicide
Julien was a contestant on The Bachelorette season of Jullian Harris. In 2010, he shot himself in the head in a remote part of California’s San Bernardino National Forest.
Eric Hill: Paragliding Accident
Eric was a contestant on The Bachelorette season with Andi Dorfman. He was 31 years old. Hill was a world traveler who was planning to film a documentary about his exploits. He also wrote about his adventures online on “The Global Odyssey.”
Eric Hill went on one date with Andi, but had been eliminated from the show prior to his April, 2014 fatal paragliding accident in Utah. He was in a coma for three days prior to his death.
The producers of the show made the following statement about his death:
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of our friend, Eric Hill. Eric inspired us every day with his passion, his courage and his adventurous spirit, and for that we are very thankful. On behalf of our cast, crew and producers, we send our love, our thoughts and our prayers to Eric’s family during this difficult time.”
The producers made the decision not to cut him from the show, even though he was already deceased at the time the show began to air. Some people felt that ABC handled his death respectfully; others believe that they exploited his death in order to promote the show.
Ben Higgins: Family Friends Died in Airplane Crash While He was Shooting The Bachelor
Not every tragedy that affects a member of The Bachelor family has involved the death of a former cast member. Sometimes, the bachelors, bachelorettes and contestants are affected by the death of someone close to them. This was the case recently when Bachelor Ben Higgins was filming his season. During one of the early episodes, two close family friends from Ben’s hometown of Warsaw, Indiana passed away after the crash of a small private plane. Ben tearfully shared his sadness with the women he was dating on the show … although some were more sensitive to his sadness than others.
