Trestle bridge destroyed by fire in Mayerthorpe, Alberta

A devastating industrial fire, reported by the Alberta Emergency alert system on Tuesday at 2:42 p.m., has destroyed a Canadian National Railway trestle bridge and forced a local school to be evacuated as the fire raged on in Mayerthorpe, Alberta.

As reported by CBC Edmonton, just northwest of Edmonton in Mayerthorpe, the fire burned quickly through the wooden trestle bridge causing smoke to fill the area. As a precaution, residents were being asked to close all windows, vents, and doors.

Officials reported to Edmonton’s CTV that students from both Mayerthorpe junior and high school were evacuated. They were taken to the elementary school across town. Individuals in a local mobile home community, Kreek’s Krossing Trailer Court, were also evacuated.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Residents are being urged to stay away from the area near the bridge and allow the firefighters to work to contain the fire.

More details to come as this is a developing story.
