Facebook has had a “bug bounty” for a long time but this is the first time they have awarded the bounty to a 10 year old. Jani, a Finish child, discovered a bug on Instagram that allowed users to delete comments of other people. He is the youngest person to ever receive the reward.
Jani (his last name has not been revealed to protect his identity) told a the Finnish Iltalehti newspaper that he just wanted to see if the comment field could handle a malicious code and he quickly discovered that it could not.
According to NBC News,
Jani, who is still too young to have a Facebook or Instagram account of his own, said he learned coding from Youtube videos and found a way to delete user comments from Instagram accounts.
The young man from Finland that now has $10,000 in his pocket, is planning to buy a new bike and a football for now but he is considering pursuing a career in data security.
ABC New reports that, “Facebook, which owns Instagram, has paid more than $4.3 million to more than 800 researchers around the world since the program began five years ago.”
Facebook has been running their Bug Bounty program since 2011 and has awarded over $4.3 million dollars to over 800 bug bounty hunters from around the world.
