Graphic Artist Darwyn Cooke Dies

Eisner Award winning comic book artist and animator Darwyn Cooke died May 14 as a result of cancer in his Florida home at the age of 53. In a statement the family said that Cooke was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

The Canadian born artist made his comic book debut with DC Comics in 1985 with “Talent Showcase #19”. For the next several years Cooke was a storyboard artist for DC’s ‘Batman Beyond”, “Superman”, and “The New Batman Adventures”.

Teaming up with Ed Brubaker in 2001, Cooke brought new life to “Catwoman” with a new design. He also wrote and illustrated what would be the prequel to “Catwoman” “Selina’s Big Score”.

Other works by Cooke include “X-Force”, “Wolverine/Doop”,the “Parker” crime novels, “Spider-Man’s Tangled Web”, “The New Frontier”, “Before Watchmen”, “The Twilight Children”, and “The Spirit”.

Cooke was an uncredited producer on the video “Justice League: The New Frontier”, a title designer for “Batman Beyond: The Movie”, a creative consultant and character designer for “Justice League: The New Frontier”, a character designer for “Superman”, and a director on three episodes of “Men in Black: The Series”.

As a writer, Cooke contributed to “Justice League”, “Justice League: The New Frontier”, “Cartoon Superheroes Abridged: The Movie” and “Cartoon Superheroes Abridged”.

Cooke has also been credited as a storyboard artist for “The New Batman Adventures”, six episodes of “Batman Beyond”, three episodes of “Superman”, two episodes of “Men in Black: The Series”, an episode of “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command”, “Justice League: The New Frontier”, an episode of “Batman: Black and White”, “Batman Beyond”, and an art contributor on “Secret Origin: “The Story of DC Comics”.

He was born on November 16, 1962 in Toronto, Ontario.

Cooke is survived by his wife Marsha.
