The circus that was the Republican National Convention closed Thursday night in a 75-minute acceptance speech by their nominee, Donald Trump, a speech that was short on policy, but long on complaints. There were moments of what alone could be described as absolute lunacy instead of a showcase of the party’s most promising and best. In the first 24 hours, the wife of the candidate, who was to be crowned in a glorious fashion, was accused of plagiarism in her first speech to the nation. Melania Trump’s speech, was not only cherry picked from someone else’s speech, it was cherry picked from none other than Michelle Obama. It seemed that the convention chairman Paul Manafort was the ringmaster, arguing that it was all Hillary Clinton’s fault for the plagiarized speech. If you saw any of the Republican Convention, you would have learned that apparently, Hillary Clinton was to blame for everything.
The policies of the Republican Platform, which many labored over, weren’t mentioned much by the slew of B-listers such Scott Baio, Willie Robertson and Antonio Sabato Jr.who shared their support for Donald Trump.
There are plenty of good reasons why those in the entertainment industry may not want to bring up one of the major points in the platform. The Democratic Party, has reiterated its support for same-sex marriage as a constitutional right of every American, and that more needs to be done to protect those in the LGBt community.
The Republican Party platform does not support gay marriage and would actually turn back strides the LGBT have fought for and won. Democrats have vowed to fight for nondiscrimination laws at the federal level so that states like North Carolina who pass state laws which infringe on the rights of LGBT people would be ruled invalid or even illegal.
On the Republican side, the rights of gay and the transgender have been swept aside for what they say is religious freedom. Although, the United States Supreme Court has upheld the rights of gays to marry, the Republican platform would seek a constitutional amendment to steal the basic right of marriage away from gays. According to the Guardian, “the GOP includes a defense of “natural marriage” and even embraces “conversion therapy”, the controversial and widely banned the practice of trying to convert LGBT individuals to being heterosexual. It appears that the Democratic platform includes equality for all while the Republicans would like to see it banished from those outside the lily white, country club loving, fat cats.
The Democratic Platform actually includes real science it their platform, arguing the United States needs to do their part in finding cleaner fuel alternatives, to repair the earth and to help repair what is happening due to global warming. The Republican platform is short, really short. One issue they did put into their platform is that it praises coal as an “abundant, clean, affordable, reliable domestic energy resource.” This is a platform for the party that has nominated a man who believes global warming was made up by the Chinese. No wonder the platform is so short.
The one major issue that separates the blue and the red is the issue of abortion. The Democratic Platform unquestionably supports a woman’s choice in relation to reproduction. The platform states that the Democrats vow “to oppose, and seek to overturn, all federal and state laws that impede a woman’s access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment. It also strongly supports the repeal of harmful restrictions that obstruct women’s access to healthcare around the world, including the Global Gag Rule and the Helms Amendment, which bars US assistance to other countries that provide safe, legal, abortion.” In other words allowing a woman to decide her own reproduction and life choices. What a concept!
Now the Republican Platform seeks not only to overturn Roe V Wade, but the platform also states that “we support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.” Yes, that is right, the Republican Party has decided that women should not decide what happens to their own body and that the Republican Party wants to even create a constitutional amendment to do so. The Republicans oppose an Equal Rights Amendment for women but by all means, strip them of a basic right, of when to reproduce.
The Democratic vs Republican platform highlights the great division among Americans. It is one thing to have an ideology argument, it is another to turn back the hands of time and reverse civil rights for Americans. The Republicans convention was filled with fear-mongering and short on substance. We don’t know yet, how the Democratic convention will go but one thing is for sure: they don’t have to raise the bar too high to do a better job than the Republicans did. The Democrats hope for a convention that will have high viewership for substance not controversy. Will this convention go off without a hitch? Nope, there will be problems but will it be in their platform of progressive values, no it won’t. It will. Like in the Republican convention disagreement will be over the status quo of elite and how power is attained. The Democrats only have to look at what happened in Cleveland to know what not to do.
