Alexix Arquette – a member of the Arquette acting family – died September 11 at the age of 47. According to brother Richmond, she was surrounded by family at the time of her death. Brother Richmond noted that Alexis died as she had lived – on her own terms, fast and painless.
Arquette was an entertainer and activist for the transgender community. Born Robert Arquette, Alexis documented her transition in 2007 with the film “She’s My Brother.”
In a statement issued by the family speaking on Alexis and her decision s,the family said, “Her career was cut short, not by her passing, but by her decision to live her truth and her life as a transgender woman. Despite the fact that there are few parts for trans actors, she refused to play roles that were demeaning or stereotypical. She was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people. She fiercely lived her reality in a world where it is dangerous to be a trans person — a world largely unready to accept differences among human beings, and where there is still the ugliness of violence and hostility towards people that we may not understand.”
Alexis made her screen debut in 1989 as Georgette in the “Last Exit to Brooklyn.” From there she went on to appear in over five dozen productions including “Alien Nation,” “American Playhouse,” an uncredited role as the Vampire DJ in an episode of “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer,” “Pulp Fiction,” an episode of the television series “Roseanne,” George in “The Wedding Singer” – inspired by Boy George, “Bride of Chucky,” an episode of the television series “Felicity,” two episodes of “Xena: Warrior Princess,” two episodes of the television series “Friends,” an episode of the television series “Californication,” and “Blended” in 2014. The short “The Pretender” has been completed and “Citizens” is in post production.
She was born Robert Arquette on July 28, 1969 in Los Angeles. Born into an acting career, young Robert joined the family business at age 12.
Alexis is survived by siblings Patricia, Rosanna, Richmond, and David.
