‘Duckie’ Thot Cites Discrimination as Australia’s Next Top Model Contestant

The modelling world has often been a strict and insensitive one for young talent. So it shouldn’t be a big surprise when model Nyaduk “Duckie” Thot is speaking out about the discrimination she experienced on Australia’s Next Top Model.

South Sudanese Model- “Duckie” Thot

The South Sudanese-born Nyaduk Thot mentioned the humiliation she felt competing on one of the ANTM shoots back in 2013, when the hair stylists said they “didn’t know how to cornrow her natural hair” and so she had to do it herself.  She went on to explain, “I was extremely upset and embarrassed that they ‘didn’t know how’ to cornrow my natural hair when at the end of the day that’s their job. I sat in front of the mirror silently crying before my shoot doing my own hair, cameras rolling while all the other girls had hair stylists…”

“Duckie” Thot also recounted the incident on an interview with “Teen Vogue” just recently, adding that it had a profound affect on her.

“I felt like a joke during that whole scene to be honest. And, I felt like that many other times during the show. I got a lot of backlash on social media for my weight gain, the colour of my skin and my hair.”

Thot said that since the Instagram post, however, she has received an overwhelming amount of support which has added to the fact that that her career is moving along quite nicely, thank you very much. This, despite a fairly recent comment from fellow U.S. Top Model Alumnus, Winnie Harlow. Harlow called her “cauliflower head” when referring to Thot’s hair style in certain photos for a shoot for jewellery company- Dinosaur Designs- where they wanted her hair natural.

Thot once again sent a message through Instagram: “It’s not fun being bullied for something you can’t control and to have a top model woman of colour who I thought encouraged acceptance and self love call me out for rocking my natural hair, isn’t cool at all….”  After the posting, however, Miss Harlow has since apologized.

Yet despite all her humiliation getting there, Miss “Duckie” Nyaduk Thot is enjoying a successful career. Just Wednesday night ( December 7), in New York City she drew attention in a red carpet event for her statuesque frame and slender figure. She showcased a floor-length white formal dress with black lace adorning the halter style top. The look was set off with a stunning lariat-look necklace and sparkling stud earrings. Sometimes, as they say, success is the best form of revenge.
