‘Reign’ Season 4 Is the Last: CW Announces Decision to End the Series

The CW announced on December 8 that Reign Season 4 will be the last. The season will air in February 2017 and likely end sometime before the summer.

The news is not the biggest of shocks to Reign fans, but is still a disappointment. A story about the real historical figure Mary, Queen of Scots, the show instantly gained haters. Those who knew the real story were instantly turned off by the addition of Henri II of France’s illegitimate son Bash and the decision to include fancy dresses that would have never been worn during the 1500s.

However, there were some who were quick to defend the show. This was a fictional representation of Mary, Queen of Scots’ life and purely aimed to entertain the younger generation. It would likely get numerous people interested in the real history in a similar way Showtime’s The Tudors got people interested in Henry VIII of England and BBC’s The White Queen got people interested in Edward IV of England and his wife Elizabeth Woodville. Both of those had several historically unlikely elements.

Reign was strong enough for the network for the first season, but a slower second season led to a move from Mondays to Fridays for Reign Season 3. The show then didn’t return straight after the winter break, and told the rest of the season in fewer episodes from March 2016. While Reign Season 4 was confirmed by the CW in May, by June it was clear that it wasn’t strong enough for the fall lineup. In November 2016, the premiere date for Season 4 was announced and there were instantly theories that it would be the final year.

Reign Season 4 will have 16 episodes to finish off the storyline. During this season, fans will meet Mary’s second and third husband (if the story follows real life). Fans hope to see Bash return, although Torrance Combs, who plays him, hasn’t said whether he will or will not return yet. He did point out that the show will have aired the same number of episodes as eight season of Game of Thrones by the time it has finished in less time!

There is already a Change.org petition calling for Netflix to pick up Reign once the CW lets it go. The great news is Reign Season 4 will appear on Netflix just eight days after its series finale, so sometime in June 2017.

Fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts. Past and present cast members have also done the same, including Toby Regbo and Alan Van Spring.

This is the second CW TV show to be canceled so far. The Vampire Diaries Season 8 is going to be the last, and will also get 16 episodes to finish off the storyline. There are still rumors that The Originals Season 4 will be the last, too. There is currently no news about whether pilot shows No Tomorrow and Frequency will get new seasons in the 2017-2018 season.

The news couldn’t have come on a more poignant day. December 8, 1542 was the day that the real Mary, Queen of Scots was born.

What do you think about the news that The CW is cancelling Reign after Season 4? Is it time or would you like to see more? Reign Season 4 will premiere on the CW on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 9pm.
