1831: HMS Beagle Departs With Charles Darwin

Naturalist Charles Darwin set sail on the HMS Beagle on this day in history. The ship left Plymouth, England on a trip around the southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The aim was for Darwin to learn more about the flora, fauna, and geology of the islands in the area. The information he gained would help him understand more about evolution.

1907: Don Miguel Braganza Warned About Exile

Military man Don Miguel Braganza was warned by Austrian emperor Francis Joseph that he would face exile if he continued to plot against the Portugese government. Rather than listening to the emperor, Braganza would tell a reporter about his plans for overthrowing the government. Unsurprisingly, he was summoned into the emperor’s presence immediately.

1932: Opening of the Radio City Music Hall

On this day in history, the Radio City Music Hall opened. Ray Bolger and Martha Graham starred in the opening stage show in New York City. The largest pipe organ by Wurlitzer had been built specifically for the venue. The hall is now home to The Rockettes, a precision dance team for women.

1954: Germany Asks France to Join NATO

France had a difficult decision on December 27, 1954. After originally being told it was allowed no more weapons due to its involvement in World War II, West Germany asked to join NATO. It would mean rearming if allowed. French lawmakers had to decide whether it would allow this. Eventually, West Germany was allowed in and now is part of NATO as Germany.Star Wars

1977: Release of Star Wars in Britain

Thousands of people went to movie theaters in the UK after the British release of Star Wars. It had already been in movie theaters in American since June of the same year. People queued in the early hours of the morning in Leicester Square and the Dominion to get tickets that had not been previously pre-booked.

2004: Peyton Manning Breaks a Touchdown Record

Today in history saw the single-season touchdown record broken. Peyton Manning scored the 49th touchdown of the season with his pass to Brandon Stokely, while playing for the Indianapolis Colts. The game was against the San Diego Chargers and was just part of Manning’s best season so far in his career.
