Longtime Director Jeffrey Hayden Has Died

Long time television director Jeffrey Hayden died as a result of cancer on Christmas Eve – December 24 – at the age of 90 in his Los Angeles home.

Hayden made his television debut as a producer in 1951 for an episode of “The Billy Bean Show”. He also produced three episodes of “How the West Was Won”, six episodes of “Santa Barbara”, “Primary Colors: The Story of Corita”, and “Children in America’s Schools with Bill Moyers”.

He made his directorial debut in 1954 with an episode of “Omnibus”. From there he went on to be a part of over 70 productions including “The Loretta Young Show”, “Lassie”, “Leave it to Beaver”, 28 episodes of “The Donna Reed Show”, “Dennis the Menace”, nine episodes of “77 Sunset Strip”, “Route 66”, “The Andy Griffith Show”, “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies”, 39 episodes of “Peyton Place”, “Shane”, “Batman”, “That Girl”, “Love, American Style”, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”, “The Virginian”, “Alias, Smith, and Jones”, “Mannix”, “Ironside”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Quincy M.E.”, “Falcon Crest”, “Magnum P.I.”, five episodes of “Knight Rider”, and “In the Heat of the Night”

Hayden’s directing prowess was not limited to the screen, he also directed a number of stae productions including “The Front Page”, “Death of a Salesman”, Candida”, “The Sunshine Boys, “Fences”, and “Desire Under the Elms”.

Along with all his directorial credits, Hayden was the executive producer for the daytime drama “Santa Barbara”.

Hayden’s accomplishments include a Governor’s Media Award, an NAACP Award, and a number of awards from his “Children in America’s Schools” series.

He was born Raphael Levine on October 15, 1926 in New York City. He began his television career at NBC in New York after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Hayden is survived by his wife of over 60 years actress Eva Marie Saint, children Laurette and Darrell, and four grandchildren.
