With the beginning of a new year, Nielsen SoundScan has compiled all the records on music sales and streams for the year 2016. Not only did he rack up record breaking award nominations, Canadian artist Drake tops the album sales list with his newest release “Views” with a total of 4.14 million in album sales – 1.6 million via traditional CD sales and the remainder from downloads and streaming. The album also spent a total of 13 weeks in the number one spot on the Billboard 200 Album chart.
Overall music sales were up last year with vinyl sales reaching a record high.
After her record breaking year in 2015, Adele placed second with “25” behind Drake with nearly 2.4 million in sales and streams. “Lemonade” by Beyonce, “Anti” by Rihanna, “Blurryface” by Twenty One Pilots, “Purpose” by Justin Bieber, “Traveller” by Chris Stapleton, the original Broadway cast recording for “Hamilton: An American Musical”, the soundtrack for “Suicide Squad”, and “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande round out the top 10 in sales and streams for 2016.
Nielson calculates a non traditional album as one album equalling 10 downloaded songs and 1,500 streamed songs equalling one album.
Calculating the numbers for only CD sales, Adele leads the way for the second year in a row for “25” with1,731,000 copies. Drake, Beyonce, Chris Stapleton, Pentatonix, the Broadway Cast of “Hamilton: An American Musical”, Twenty One Pilots,Prince, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber fill out the top 10.
