For 23 seasons award winning professional Ballroom dancers have served as instructors, partners, and choreographers for a group of celebrities, many of whom have no dance experience of any kind in the hopes of taking home the Mirror Ball Trophy at the end of the “Dancing with the Stars” season.
On January 6 the DWTS Live tour – We Come to Dance made a stop in Niagara Falls as the dancers returned to the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino Events Center to perform before a packed house of over, 2,500 fans.
All during the DWTS season the focus is always on the celebrity and telling their stories through dance; but the tour is for the professional dancers and a chance to tell their stories.
The 10 professional dancers – Emma Slater, Hayley Erbert, Jenna Johnson, Lindsay Arnold, Sharna Burgess, Val Chmerkovskiy, Artem Chigvintsev, Gleb Savchenco, Alan Bersten, and Keo Motsepe – and DWS season 23 winning celebrity Laurie Hernandez told their stories in video clips and through dance.
After opening the show with a group performance, the dancers performed to the music of a wide variety of artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Tina Turner, Celine Dion, the Spice Girls, and Michael Jackson; along with music in Spanish, Russian, and Afrikaans.
After the intermission, Laurie and Val recreated their trio dance Samba with a little help from Jenna as the dance teacher. Then it was time for a little dance history with Lindsay and Gleb dancing the oldest of the Ballroom dancers – the Viennese Waltz, Sharna and Alan with the Argentine Tango, Jenna and Artem with the Cha Cha Cha, and Emma and Keo with the Rumba.
Also included in the second half of the show was a little tour bus confession with questions like who is the most romantic, who would you most like to be/not be stranded on a desert island with, who is the sexiest, tell your secrets to, most interesting, trust your life with, and who would you still be friends with in 30 years.
The final dances of the night were dedicated to love with Emma talking about her engagement to Sasha and their favourite song “Lucky” by Jason Mraz, and Lindsay being the only married women on the tour and thanking her husband for letting her portray “Dirty Diana”.
Anticipating the chance to dance with a pro, fans brought their “Dance with Me” signs; but not this year.
The night ended as it began with a group dance…and streamers falling from the ceiling with the cast telling the fans…now it’s your turn.
