Last September, while then-candidate Donald Trump, was still the underdog in the presidential race, independent candidate Evan McMullin announced that he believed it was possible that Russia was blackmailing Trump. McMullin stated in September, “You know I hear from my old intelligence friends that Donald Trump has been engaged in some activities in Russia that Vladimir Putin may be using to blackmail Trump.” There was great apprehension over this claim with members of the Trump campaign calling it ludicrous.
Tuesday, CNN has reported that Evan McMullin may have been correct. According to the networks’ investigation by reporter Jake Tapper, that President Obama and President-Elect Trump were presented last week with allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Trump. The allegations come from multiple US officials with direct knowledge of the briefings, according to CNN.
According to the CNN report, in the briefing that was given to both the president and president-elect, the allegations were found in reports from former British intelligent officers and the FBI is investigating the credibility and accuracy of these allegations. The report that was presented to the president and Trump was given by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, and NSA Director Admiral Mike Rogers.
According to CNN, the two-page report was attached to the original Russian report that stated that Russia tried to influence the U.S. presidential election. The report also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government.
After CNN issued their report on the possible interference between Trump and Russia, Vox reported that those who worked on the news article were CNN’s Evan Perez, Jim Sciutto, Jake Tapper, and Carl Bernstein. Bernstein is known for his work which brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon through his investigation of Watergate. The investigation led to a letter from then-Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid to FBI Director Comey in October, in which he wrote, “It has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government — a foreign interest openly hostile to the United States.” Yet the only information that was divulged was the investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Buzzfeed.com is also publishing a link to documents that are notes written by the British agent who collected the information and created a dossier. The image can be found at https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3259984-Trump-Intelligence-Allegations.html
The information in the documents was created by a former MI6 agent who as a private investigator was hired by Republican challengers to the Trump campaign. According to CNN. their sources reported that once Mr. Trump became the nominee, further investigation was funded by groups and donors supporting Hillary Clinton.
Whatever the outcome of this investigation, it should come with an “I told you so” by Evan McMullin, who as a former CIA agent, said last September that his sources told him the same thing that is now being reported by CNN and other news outlets.
