Mexican Prez Calls Off Meeting With Trump, Trump Calls for 20% Tariff on Mexican Imports

President Trump has received what he asked for in a tweet Thursday. Trump tweeted in part, “If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.” The meeting was scheduled for January 31,which has led to the Mexican President to call off the meeting in Washington.

Trump repeated his plan to make Mexico pay for the wall Wednesday evening in an interview with ABC News. Trump stated, that the U. S taxpayers will pay for the wall but Mexico will pay it back through different methods. With that interview and tweets saying that Mexico would be forced to pay for the border wall, President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted that, “This morning we have informed the White House I will not attend the working meeting planned for next Tuesday.” Peno Nieto continued to say that he hoped that a better relationship could still be achieved with the U.S.

Thursday afternoon, after new broke that the Mexican President had cancelled the plan meeting with Trump, the President revised that news by saying the trip was cancelled by mutual agreement. The Mexican President and the people of Mexico have agreed that they will not pay for the wall and that the notion of such is an insult.

President Trump in Philadelphia for the Republican Retreat addressed the representatives and senators that on the Mexican President had “agreed to cancel our planned meeting scheduled for next week and such a meeting would be fruitless.” Trump continued to say “that Americans needed a president who would stand up for them the say presidents in other countries stand up for their citizens. The world has taken advantage of us for many years. It’s not going to happen anymore.”

Moments ago, Thursday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer announced that the President is proposing that there will be a new tariff on goods coming into the U.S from Mexico and the tariff would be a stiff 20 percent tax. Spicer, per the pool report stated that the border tax would be part of a broader tax reform package and would help pay for the proposed wall along the US-Mexico border, according to the report. “It clearly provides the funding and does so in a way that the American taxpayer is wholly respected,” said Spicer.

“Right now our country’s policy is to tax exports and let imports flow freely in, which is ridiculous,” Spicer said. Spicer gave few details of Trump’s plan but there could be a fly in the ointment and that is Congress. A tariff or tax usually needs approval from the House and Senate. There is limited power the President has to order such a tax so experts will have to sift this one out.
