Actor John Hurt Dies

British actor Sir John Hurt died January 27 in London, England as a result of pancreatic cancer at the age of 77.

He was known for playing complicated characters including “The Elephant Man” – a role that required six hours of makeup -, Raskolnikov in “Crime and Punishment”, Caligula in “I, Claudius” and Jesus in “History of the World Part I”.

Performing on both sides of the Atlantic, Hurt has appeared in over 200 films and television productions. He made his screen debut in 1962 on the television series “Z Cars”. “A Man for All Seasons”, “I, Claudius”, “Midnight Express”, the voice of Hazel in “Watership Down”, the voice of Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings”, Kane on “Alien”, Raskol the TV movie “King Lear”, “1984”, “Spaceballs”, Ollivander in the “Harry Potter” films, “Hellboy” an “Hellboy II”, “V for Vendetta”, professor Oxley in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, “Outlander”, “An Englishman in New York”, the Priest in 10 episodes of “The Confession”, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, “Labyrinth”, 65 episodes of “Merlin”, “Doctor Who”, and The Priest in “Jackie”.
Director David Lynch called Hurt, “simply the greatest actor in the world.”

On the stage Hurt appeared in “Little Malcolm and His struggle against the Eunuchs”, “The Caretaker”, “The Dumb Waiter”, “Travesties”, “A Month in the Country”, and “Inadmissible Evidence”.

Hurt has won a Golden Globe Award and four BAFTA Awards, In 2015 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II knighted Hurt for his contributions to drama.

The youngest of three children, he was born John Vincent Hurt on January 22, 1940 in Chesterfield, England the son of an Anglican vicar father and an engineer mother. He began his acting at prep school frequently portraying female roles due to his small stature and high voice. He later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Hurt is survived by his fourth wife Anwen Rees-Myers and sons Alexander and Nicholas.
