On This Day in History: March 4

On March 4, an English king was deposed for the first time in his reign. Here are some events that happened in history today.

1461: Edward IV Becomes King

Henry VIHenry VI was deposed for the first time on this day in history. Ruling since he was nine months old, Henry VI was ineffective and suffered from bouts of insanity from 1453. Edward’s father, the Duke of York, had a claim to the throne and used that to start the Wars of the Roses. From 1455 the Houses of York and Lancaster were at war, and it was this day that the House of York ended Lancaster’s 62 year rule. Henry VI would later get control of the throne back, but would lose it again six months later.

1801: Thomas Jefferson’s Inauguration

Multiple presidential inaugurations took place on this day in history across different years. The first covered in this list was Thomas Jefferson’s. This was so important because it was the first to take place in Washington D.C, as it had just become the new Capitol of the United States. The Third President of the United States rode in alone on horseback, preferring to do away with much of the flamboyancy and fanfare his predecessors had.

His predecessor John Adams’ inauguration took place on this day four years earlier.

1861: Abraham Lincoln’s InaugurationThomas Jefferson

Today in history, Abraham Lincoln officially became the 16th United States President. During his speech, he made it clear that he would enforce federal laws in all states that seceded, but would not interfere with the institution of slavery. Six weeks later the Civil War started.

On this day 72 years later, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the President of the United States. Both presidents were assassinated.

1944: Execution of Louis “Lepke” Buchalter

At Sing Sing Prison, New York, Murder, Inc. head Louis “Lepke” Buchalter was executed. Murder, Inc. was the largest crime syndicate in the United States during the 1930s, but it collapsed when the killing squad became government witnesses. He allegedly ordered the hits on all the men who betrayed him before his own death.
