Saturday morning, President Trump took to his favorite vehicle for communication, Twitter, to announce he had just been told that President Obama took to “wiretapping” the Trump Tower during the campaign for President. Trump did not list a source for his accusations so proving his accusation is impossible to prove, but his accusation again comes after a Breitbart article posted Friday that claimed the Obama administration made to Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) requests in 2016 to monitor Trump communications and a computer server in Trump Tower focusing on possible links with Russian banks.
The President, without any proof or links, tweeted several times Saturday morning stating that, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” President Trump could be referring to the FBI was granted, a FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) court warrant in October, giving counterintelligence permission to examine the activities of ‘U.S. persons’ in Donald Trump’s campaign with ties to Russia.
Trump also tweeted Saturday morning “Is it legal for a sitting President to be “wire tapping” a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!” What is actually known is that the there was a FISA warrant granted to investigate Russian ties to the Trump campaign in October. That warrant was issued for the banking records and communications between Trump campaign advisors and Russia. The two banks involved that were being investigated were the SVB Bank and Alfa Bank. The website “Heatstreet” reported back in October that the warrant was granted, so for President Trump to tweet that the President Obama “tapped” the Trump Tower illegally would be incorrect.
The warrant was also issued to investigate Trump Tower due to a Russian server that was in the tower. Also, there were people of interest to the FBI for their connections to Russia. For one, Paul Manafort, Trump’s one-time campaign manager, kept an office in Trump Tower. There is also the matter of the Bayrock Group, one of the businesses that Trump used for real estate management and the creation of more Trump Towers across the world. Felix Sater, who runs Bayrock has been involved in Trump’s campaign, even though, he has been convicted of stabbing another man, worked as an informant for the FBI, after being arrested in a $40 million racketeering scheme that targeted Holocaust survivors out of their money for a failed Trump hotel in Florida. Sater is also still involved now in the Trump administration even working on a peace accord between Russia and the Ukraine.
“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”, Trump tweeted Saturday morning. Again Trump did not offer any proof, but with an investigation of warrants and other sources, the picture of what Trump may be talking about is the fact that one FISA warrant was turned down in the summer of 2016 but then a narrower search warrant was issued in October to gather intelligence on Trump’s ties to Russia while campaigning for President. The tweets by the President Saturday morning, are sure to bring a spotlight to the ongoing investigation into whether or not Russia worked with the Trump campaign to ensure his election and that the Russian government made sure Hillary Clinton would not be elected.
