NASCAR Assesses Bristol Penalties

After the rain filled weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Xfinity Series and Monster Energy Cup Series finally got the races completed, but on Wednesday NASCAR issued penalties to two of the racing teams – one in each series.

The Monster Energy Cup Series Furniture Row Racing’s number 78 car driven by Martin Truex Jr was penalized for having a loose lug nut in after race inspection. NASCAR rules state that a car must have all 20 lug nuts tight at the end of the race. Truex’s car had one of the lug nuts improperly installed. As a result crew chief Cole Peran has been fined $10,000. Since it is the lightest penalty assessed, Pearn has not been suspended and will not miss any races. Nor will the infraction affect Truex’s eighth place Bristol finish or his third place standing in the Championship standings. Truex has 323 points 37 behind lead Kyle Larson.

In the Xfinity Series the number 22 Penske Racing car driven by Ryan Blaney was found to be too low in post race inspection and has been assessed a penalty that will result in a one race suspension for crew chief Greg Erwin and a $10,00 fine. The Penske Racing team has been docked 10 car owner points and a loss of any advantage Blaney has earned for his second place Bristol finish when it comes to championship playoff points.
