In a film taken from a book series by horror master Stephen King, “The Dark Tower” features a lead character – The Man in Black.Set for an August 4 release the film stars Idris Elba as The Gunslinger Roland Deschain who is in search of Matthew McConaughey – The Man in Black. But unlike other films made from King’s books, this one takes the book series one step further for an extension of the original storyline which as King describes is sort of a “Lord of the Rings” type quest set in the Wild West.
In typical Stephen King fashion, all is not as it seems when what a child psychologist describes what is nothing more than dreams, becomes a real place known as Mid World where a quest to save mankind ensues.
As some avid King fans have already discovered, film creators have planted some references to other of King’s works; like a photo of Overlook Hotel found in “The Shining” and references to Pennywise the Clown from “It”. And that was just in the trailer.
King himself is listed as one of the producers, along with Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Akiva Goldsman.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, “The Dark Tower” also stars Katheryn Winnick, Abbey Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, Nicholas Hamilton, Dennis Haysbert (the deep voice heard in the All State commercials), Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Alex McGregor, Jose Zuniga, Tom Taylor, Victoria Nowak, Karl Thaning, an Michael Barbieri.
