NASCAR Issues Richmond Penalties

Last week Penske Racing’s driver Joey Logano had to start the race from the back of the field due to a transmission change. Logano drove his number 22 Penzoil car to the front of the field to win the race.

However, after the race NASCAR took the car – among others – to their R&D center for further inspection and discovered another violation – a rear end suspension violation.

As a result of the infraction, Logano will maintain his win at Richmond International Raceway but he will not be allowed to keep the bonus points nor will the win count toward his attempt at becoming a part of “The Race for the Chase” to compete for the Monster Energy Cup Series championship. Logano was also docked 25 driver points.

The infraction affects more than just Logano…crew chief Todd Gordon has been fined $50,000 and suspended for two races and team owner Roger Penske has been docked 25 ca owner points.

Joey Logano was not the only driver to receive penalties after the races at Richmond last week.

The Joe Gibbs Racing number eleven car driven by Denny Hamlin was charged with a lug nut violation and will cost crew chief Mike Wheeler a $10,000 fine.

Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric’s number 21 car owned by Richard Childress Racing was also charged with a lug nut violation. Hemric’s car had two loose lug nuts; as a result, crew chief Danny Stockman Jr was fined $10,000 and has been suspended for one race.
