1568: Mary, Queen of Scots Reaches England

Mary Queen of ScotsJust days after fleeing Scotland, Mary Stuart, the abdicated Queen of Scotland, reached England. She had hoped that her cousin Elizabeth I of England would support her claim to the Scottish throne and help her overthrow her Protestant enemies. On May 16, Mary crossed Solway Firth by fishng boat and stayed at Workington Hall. Unfortunately for Mary, Elizabeth had other plans. Fearing for her own throne, Elizabeth put Mary into protective custody and arranged for her to be technically placed under house arrest in Carlisle Castle two days later.

1770: Marriage of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

The ill-fated French monarchs, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, married today in history. Louis was the French dauphin at the time, when he married the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, Marie Antoinette. As Marie’s mother was the Archduchess of Austria, there was hope that the marriage would align the two countries together. They would become King and Queen of France in 1774, but their reign was instantly disastrous. The monarchy was alienated from the French countrymen, due to Marie’s love of Austria and extravagant lifestyles. Louis and Marie would become the last French monarchs, overthrown during the French Revolution. They were both later executed.Marie Antoinette

1943: The Jewish Uprising Is Crushed By Nazi Germany

Nazi Germany created the Jewish Warsaw ghetto in 1940. They lived in extremely close quarters, with many transported to Treblinka. It would take three years for the Jewish people to rise up against their captors, choosing death through fighting rather than slave labor in the death camps. On this day in history, the uprising was quashed by the Germans after 28 days of fighting and upheaval. Afterwards, 40,000 Jews were massacred in retaliation. Only 200 people were left when the Soviets moved in and liberated Warsaw in 1945!
