Dems: Flynn Lied to Security Clearance Investigators

Monday, Democrat Representative Elijah Cummings said that the House Oversight Committee has obtained documents “that appear to indicate” that Michael Flynn “lied to the investigators who interviewed him in 2016 as part of his security clearance renewal.” According to Cummings, Flynn stated that United States corporations paid for his trip to Russia where he attended an affair to celebrate the Russian media company’s anniversary, RT, where the former National Security Adviser sat with the Russian President Putin.

In the letter that Representative Cummings has sent to Chairman Jason Chaffetz of the House Oversight Committee, the report stated that Flynn said he “had not received any benefit from a foreign country,” yet, Flynn had been paid $45,000 to attend the event with Putin. Flynn also stated to the investigators he had no substantial contacts with foreign government officials, saying he only had “insubstantial contact.” This is not factual as Flynn also worked as a foreign agent for the country of Turkey while he was an active member of the Trump campaign.

Cummings also asks the Committee to subpoena documents from the White House to verify that the Trump administration was not aware of the “misstatement” to investigators.

Cummings writes in the letter that “We need to know what the President, Vice President, White House Counsel, and other top officials knew about General Flynn —- and when they knew it.” The New York Times has reported that Flynn’s lawyer had told the Trump transition team weeks before the inauguration of President Trump that Flynn was, in fact, under investigation for allegedly working for the Turkish government during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The letter Monday, that Representative Cummings released, comes on the heels of information that Flynn will not answer to the subpoena the Senate Intelligence Committee had submitted and that Flynn, when asked to testify, will take the 5th, as it is known. Flynn will do what candidate Trump took issue with, take the Fifth Amendment which will prevent him from incriminating himself.
