Breaking News: Cory Godbolt was taken into police custody in Brookhaven, Mississippi, today after he allegedly went on a shooting spree during the night on Saturday, May 27, 2017, killing eight people at three different locations in rural Lincoln County, Mississippi.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notifications of families other than the fact that one of the victims was a Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy. Seven of the shooting victims were found in three different residences, two in Brookhaven and one in Bogue Chitto, both small towns in the state near its southern border.
The suspect was talking to his wife and her family members about him taking his children home when authorities arrived at the residence. The deputy who was shot and killed was one of the first officers on the scene.
Godbolt gave statements to The Clarion-Ledger following his arrest that included:
Godbolt’s explanation of what happened immediately prior to his arrest, “I was having a conversation with her stepdaddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home. Somebody called the officer, people that didn’t even live at the house. That’s what they do. They intervene.”
On the fact police were called, “They cost him his life. I’m sorry.” (Thought to be a reference to the slain deputy.)
On the suspect’s intent regarding his capture, “My intentions was to have God kill me. I ran out of bullets.Suicide by cop was my intention.“
Godbolt’s thoughts about his actions and potential consequences, “I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done.”
Investigators have begun gathering evidence, but as of now, charges have not yet been filed against Godbolt. Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant issued a statement asking everyone to pray for the victims and thanked law enforcement for doing their jobs and lamented the loss of the slain officer.
