1184BC: Troy Is Finally Sacked and Burned

Multiple armies attempted to sack Troy, but the great wall around the city protected it. The Greeks made an effort, but were forced to wait outside until it looked like they would all die or have to return home. On this day in history, the people of Troy accepted a gift the Greeks had left for them: a large horse made of wood. Little did they know, it was filled with the remaining Greek soldiers who escaped in the middle of the night and killed as many Trojans as possible and burned the city to the ground.

1509: Marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon

Henry VIIIHenry VIII is known for his six wives. On this day in history he married his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Catherine had lived the last few years in poverty and uncertainty, after her husband Arthur (Henry’s brother) died of either the sweating sickness or consumption. The two had multiple children, but only one survived to adulthood. Henry brought the 20+ year marriage to an end with an annulment in 1533, so he could marry Catherine’s lady-in-waiting Anne Boleyn.

1963: Buddhist Monk Quang Duc Burns Himself

In a plea for “charity and compassion” for all religions from President Ngo Dinh, Buddhist monk Quang Duc burned himself. President Dinh had only shown support for the Catholic religion and oppressed everyone, including Vietnam’s Buddhist majority. He was the first but he wasn’t the last, wth many other Buddhist monks burning themselves over the next few weeks. President Dinh was later assassinated in a coup.
