On This Day in History: June 19

On June 19, the British royal family changes its surname in a successful attempt to survive. Here’s a look at the events that took place today in history.

1586: Colonists Leave Roanoke Island the First Time

American Horror Story made the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke popular last year, but there is a story that took place slightly earlier. In 1584, the English tried to create a colony on the island but more supplies were needed. Some colonists were left behind, but they struggled for food and to forge good relations with the native tribes. After Sir Francis Drake happened to come across the colonists, they decided to abandon the island and left on this day in British history. Drake left 15 of his own men, who would never be seen again.

1886: President William Howard Taft and Helen Herron Marry

In history today, William Taft and Helen Herron marry in Cincinnati, OH. The two had met at a literary meeting and were complete opposites in personality. Many biographers claim that Helen pushed Taft into politics and regularly encouraged him to take promotions that would later lead to him becoming President of the United States. Unfortunately, during her first year as First Lady, Helen suffered a stroke and was left paralyzed partially. She was also the first wife of a president to have memoirs published and is one of two to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

1917: King George V of Britain Changes the Surname of the Royal Family

As World War I saw more hatred towards the Germans, the British king, George V, had to take action for the future of the monarchy. His surname was German, due to the link to the House of Hanover from the 18th century and Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert. He moved from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. As well as distancing himself from Germany, he distanced himself from the Russians by refusing to offer asylum to Tsar Nicholas II and his family, who would later abdicate and be assassinated by the Russians.
