Lucasfilm has announced a new director for the upcoming “Star Wars” saga about a young Han Solo. Set for a May 2018 release, Academy award winning director Ron Howard is taking over the reigns as the director for the film. The film is set to continue filming on July 10.
Director’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller spent 17 weeks working on the film before being replaced by Howard. The duo were let go over directional differences – screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was not happy with the comedic treatment of Han Solo.
Alden Ehrenreich has been cast in the role as a young Han Solo in the as yet untitled film. Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Joonas Suotamo, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Ian Kenny, and Michael K. Williams have also been cast in the film.
This is not the first time Howard has worked with George Lucas and Lucasfilm. Some 40 years ago Ron Howard directed “American Graffiti”.
Since making his directorial debut in 1969 in the short “Old Paint”, Howard has directed over 40 productions including “Grand Theft Auto”, “Night Shift”, “Splash”, “Cocoon”, “Backdraft”, “Apollo 13”, “The Da Vinci Code”, “Angels and Demons”, and “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years”.
