On This Day in History: June 27

On June 27, Japan officially adopted the yen as its currency, two years after the currency was first created. Here’s a look at events and birthdays from today in history.

1871: Japanese Clan Notes Suspended as Currency

In 1869, the yen was created as the Japanese currency, but clan notes were still used. On this day in history, the Japanese decided to suspend (and later completely remove) the use of clan notes. These notes had been in existence since the Middle Ages, and were notes created by feudal lords. The currency remains the official one of the country and is now the third most traded currency in the world, behind the U.S. dollar and the euro.

1940: Enigma Set Up by the Germans

After occupying French territory, the Germans employed the most sophisticated coding machine the world had ever seen: Enigma. It was their new two-way radio communication center, which had been invented back in 1919 by Dutchman Hugo Koch. It initially looked like a typewriter, but was adapted by the Germans to create coded messages that were unbreakable. That was until the Brits found a way to break the code. The British broke the coding before the Polish invasion, but pretended not to so they could create a more devastating attack on the Nazis.

1995: Disney Gets Licensing Deal for Mountie Products

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had spent years annoyed at low-quality merchandise over its mountie brand. Rather than fight against the low-quality companies, the RCMP worked with Disney in a controversial deal that would see Disney gain exclusive control over those using the Mountie image. The licensing deal was not put towards the public first, causing outcry among Canadians.
