On July 2, Amelia Earhart disappeared during her attempted flight around the world. This is a look at the events and birthdays from history today.

1776: Congress Votes for Independence

American Independence

The Second Continental Congress officially voted for independence from the British today in history. It was a unanimous vote, although New York did abstain. This occurred less than a month after Congress found that New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and South Carolina were unwilling to officially declare independence at that time, but wanted independence later. The final vote was delayed until July 2, when the majority of the states were in favor. Despite July 2 being a monumental day, the Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed until July 4, making it the official Day of Independence.

1937: Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

On this day in history, Amelia Earhart and Frederick Noonan disappeared on their attempt to fly around the world. It was at the trickiest part of the journey, and they lost their bearings. Earhart was hearing to Howland Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and in some contact with the U.S. Coast Guard. Signal was lost and the plane was running out of fuel. Many presume she attempted to land in the water, after making it clear there was no land in sight. Nobody has ever found the remains of the two on the flight.

1987: Ian Brady Agrees to Help in Saddleworth Moors Search

In British history today, Ian Brady agreed to help with the police search for bodies on Saddleworth Moor, Manchester. It was the first time since his conviction 21 years earlier that he agreed to help, and came after the  body of Hollin Brow was found. Brady and his accomplice Myra Hindley were accused and found guilty of murdering numerous children during the 1960s. Brady died in 2017, refusing to tell anybody where the body of Keith Bennett was, devastating the boy’s family.
