NYPD Kill Gunman Alleged to Have Assassinated Officer Miosotis Familia

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, 48-year-old Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran of the NYPD, was shot in the head while as she sat in her patrol car in the Bronx with her partner. Officers who spotted the shooting suspect gave chase, killing the suspect when he drew a revolver on them.

The gunman was identified as 34-year-old Alexander Bonds who had six arrests prior to what the NYPD is characterizing as an “unprovoked attack” and “assassination” of Officer Familia. Bonds was on parole for a robbery that occurred in Syracuse, New York, at the time of the shooting.

Officer Familia and her partner, who was uninjured in the shooting, were sitting in a marked patrol unit, a mobile command post, when Bonds allegedly shot through a window in the vehicle, striking Officer Familia in the head. Her partner radioed for assistance, saying, “My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”

Two NYPD officers reportedly confronted Alexander Bonds a block away from the area of the shooting. Bonds then drew a gun on them, according to their report, at which time Bonds was shot and killed. A bystander who was shot during that encounter between police and Bonds is in stable condition, according to the NYPD.

Familia was taken by ambulance in extremely critical condition, according to the NYPD, and later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill, talking about the incident in a news conference, said:

“Based on what we know right now, this was an unprovoked attack against police officers who work to keep this great city safe.”

Officer Familia and her partner were about to finish their shift when Familia was shot. Miosotis Familia was a mother of three young children including a set of twins. Before joining the NYPD, Familia, who is also a nurse, had worked for the Red Cross.
