Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, 48-year-old Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran of the NYPD, was shot in the head while as she sat in her patrol car in the Bronx with her partner. Officers who spotted the shooting suspect gave chase, killing the suspect when he drew a revolver on them.
The gunman was identified as 34-year-old Alexander Bonds who had six arrests prior to what the NYPD is characterizing as an “unprovoked attack” and “assassination” of Officer Familia. Bonds was on parole for a robbery that occurred in Syracuse, New York, at the time of the shooting.

Her partner radioed for assistance, saying, “My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”
Two NYPD officers reportedly confronted Alexander Bonds a block away from the area of the shooting. Bonds then drew a gun on them, according to their report, at which time Bonds was shot and killed. A bystander who was shot during that encounter between police and Bonds is in stable condition, according to the NYPD.
