Award winning actor John Heard died July 21 in Palo Alto, California at the age of 72. No official cause of death has been announced, only that Heard was recovering from recent back surgery at the time of his death.
Heard is best known for his role as father Peter McCallister in the “Home Alone” films.
He made his screen debut in 1975 in the made for TV movie “Valley Forge”. From there he went on to appear in nearly 200 productions including “On the Yard”, “the television mini series “The Scarlet Letter”, Alex Cutter in “Cutter’s Way”, “Cat People”, “After Hours”, “Tales from the Darkside”, “The Trip to Bountiful”, “Miami Vice”, “Big”, “Beaches” with Bette Midler, “Blown Away”, “Gladiator”, “In the Line of Fire”, “The Pelican Brief”, “Touched by an Angel”, the “Law & Order” franchise, “The Sopranos” as detective Vic Makazian, “CSI: Miami”, “Jack & Bobby”, “Numb3rs”, “Steel City” where he was also an associate producer, the reboot of “Battlestar Galactica” as Commander Barry Garner, “Prison Break: Resurrection” where he played the Governor, “Southland”, “Entourage”, “Sharknado”, “Modern Family”, “NCIS: Los Angeles”, the new “MacGyver”, and his final role earlier this year in “Outsiders”.
Heard was not one to make the game and talk show circuit, the few performances where he appeard as himself were nearly all in a documentary of some form or another.
“Imprisoned”, “The Tale”, and “Living Among Us” are all in post production with the short “Graffiti” and “Last Rampage” completed. The film “Broome Street Boys” is in the process of filming.
Before moving to Hollywood and making his debut on the screen, Heard performed on the Broadway stage, making his debut in 1973 in the original play “Warp”. He also appeared in the 1975 revival of “Hamlet” where he portrayed Guildenstern, the original play “Total Abandon”, and the 1983 revival of the play “The Glass Menagerie”.
During his career Heard won a Theatre World Award, and an Obie Award.
He was born on March 7, 1945 in Washington DC the son of a community theatre actress and government worker father.
Married and divorced three times, he is predeceased by his son Max, Heard is survived by his son Jack and daughter Annika.
