While still in high school Byron drove in the Camping World Truck Series where he won a record setting seven races and Rookie of the Year honours driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports. After only one year driving the trucks, Dale Earnhardt Jr hired Byron to take over the driving duties of the number nine car for JR Motorsports. To date Byron has won three races in the Xfinity Series and is currently second in the Chase Standings behind fellow JR Motorsports driver Elliott Sadler.
William Byron’s racing career began in 2015 with the K&N Pro Series where he won four races and the championship for the K&N Pro Series East.
Beginning with the 2018 NASCAR racing season, William Byron will again be behind the wheel of a new car when he takes over driving the number five car for Rick Hendrick. Byron will join team mates Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, and Alex Bowman representing Hendrick Motorsports.
Speaking on his decision to bring Byron on board to drive for Hendrick Motorsports, owner Rick Hendrick said, “we see he’s got the talent; his character is unbelievable. He spends all of his time either studying or iRacing or in a simulator or in a race car. His rapid rate of success has just blown us all away.” Byron is enrolled as a student at Liberty University – his current car sponsor. Liberty will be making the move with Byron to continue sponsoring the young driver.
With Byron taking over the number five car, that means that Kasey Kahne joins Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch as Monster Energy Cup Series drivers who are looking for a ride next season. Kahne took his number five car to victory lane at the Brickyard 400 last month.
