2017 NFL Season Begins – KC vs NE

With the threat of the most powerful hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean’s history bearing down on south Florida, the 2017 NFL season gets underway with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in Foxboro.


The Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers game that was originally scheduled for opening Sunday (Sept 10) has been postponed due to Hurricane Irma. The game will now be played during week eleven when both teams would have had a bye week.

Before the game began, the New England Patriots unveiled their 2016 Super Bowl pennant.

After winning the coin toss, the Kansas City Chiefs defers to the second half and kicks off to the Patriots to begin the game.

The Patriots took their opening drive 73 yards down the field for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead over the Chiefs.

After Kansas City fumbled on their opening possession, the Patriots marched down the field but are stopped short of a score on a fourth and half a yard. The Chiefs take over on the 10 yard line.

On their second possession the Chiefs take the ball 90 yard down the field to score a touchdown. The extra point is good and the game is tied 7-7.

At the end of the first quarter, the score is tied at seven apaiece.

New England begins the second quarter with a field goal attempt on fourth and one. The kick is good and the Patriots take the lead 10-7.

The Patriots score a touchdown, the extra point is good making the score 17-7 Patriots.

With 13 seconds remaining in the half, the Chiefs score a touchdown to bring the score to 17-14 New England leading.

At halftime the New England Patriots lead the Kansas City Chiefs 17-14.

The Kansas City Chiefs begin the second half of the game taking the ball after deferring to the second half when they won the coin toss, but fail to make a score and have to punt the ball.

On a 75 yard pass play Kansas City scores a touchdown to take over the lead of the game. Kansas City 21 – New England 17.

With 5:01 left in th third quarter, the Patriots score a touchdown to retake the lead 24-21.

After a penalty for throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage, the Patriots kick a field goal to make the score 27-21 New England.

At the end of the third quarter the score is New England 27 – Kansas City 21.

In the opening drive of the fourth quarter the Kansas City Chiefs goes 78 yards for a touchdown and ties the game. The extra point is good – just grazing the inside of the upright – to give the Chiefs the lead 28-27.

With 5:14 remaining in the game the Kansas City Chiefs score a touchdown and extra point to make the score 35-21 Chiefs.

With 4:00 remaining in the game the Kansas City Chiefs score another touchdown to make the score 42-21 with an offense of over 500 yards. But it could turn out to be a very costly drive for the Chiefs after Eric Berry was taken off the field on a cart with an Achilles related injury.

Final score for the opening game of the 2017 NFL season: Kansas City Chief 42 – New England Patriots 27.
