“Dancing with the Stars” returns for a 25th season with two DWTS Champion dancers returning and a new group of celebrity dancers.
The night of dancing begins with a group number to “Dancing in the Street” that introduces the couples. The dance was choreographed by Emmy Award winning choreographer Mandy Moore.
Hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews return for another season.
This week only one of the judges is making the comments after the dance.
The night of competition begins with two time DWTS Champion Cheryl Burke celebrating 20 years on the show when she pairs up with NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens. The get the season started with a Cha Cha. Host Tom Bergeron noted that it was a good start for the show. Head judge Len Goodman said that Terrell entertained him so many times on Monday Night Football and entertained him again on Monday night. Len noted that the dance was full of fun and energy. Terrell and Cheryl scored 15 points for their dance…much to the dismay of the audience.
Singer Debbie Gibson joins the newest DWTS pro Alan Berstin for a Foxtrot to one of Debbie’s own songs – “Lost in Your Eyes”. Debbie called the performance emotional. Bruno called the dance dreamy, in tune, and so lovingly performed; adding that they had some great chemistry and partnering. Bruno did tell Debbie to watch her arms and shoulders. Debbie and Alan scored 17 points for their dance.
“Pretty Little Liars” actress Sasha Pieterse partners with Gleb Savchenko for a Cha Cha. In her intro package, Sasha said that her parents were professional dancers. Tom noted that Sasha looked pretty confident out there. Carrie Ann said that Sasha looked fierce out there and moved her body well; but noted that Sasha got a little ahead of the music but is on the right track. Sasha and Gleb scored 18 points for their dance.
“Property Brother” Drew Scott pairs up with season 24 DWTS champion Emma Slater for a Foxtrot to “Our House” by Madness that brought some rousing applause from the audience. Len said that if Drew were a house, he would be a fixer upper; adding that Drew needed more finesse. Brother Jonathan was waiting with Erin in the sky box. Drew and Emma scored 16 points for their dance.
“Shark Tank” star – and professed cougar – Barbara Cororan pairs up with Keo for a Salsa. In her intro package Barbara said that if she got Keo for a partner it would be a dream come true. She also noted that this is the first time she will be competing with other women because she is usually competing with men. Tom noted that it was a good start. Bruno noted that she can shaker her moneymaker; adding that the intention was there but the execution needs work. Barbara and Keo scored 14 points for their dance.
Broadway performer and “Hamilton” actor Jordan Fisher pairs up with Lindsay Arnold for a Tango that brought some arousing applause from the audience. Tom said that confidence and charisma have entered the building. Calling the dance so good, Carrie Ann said, “wowza;” adding that Jordan shouldn’t be dancing like that on week one. She said that he was in control of the dance, added so much swagger, was loaded with content, and they are the partnership to watch. Jordan and Lindsay earned the highest score so far with 22 points.
Next up…”Wife Swap”
First up are Nick Lachay – whose brother Drew won season two of DWTS – and newlywed Peta Murgatroyd with a Cha Cha. Len said that Nick came out and went for it with no holding back. Nick and Peta scored 18 points for their dance.
Nick’s wife Vanessa Lachay and Maksim Chmerkovskiy also perform a Cha Cha complete with baby and pram. Bruno said Vanessa was a yummy mommy with a sexy carriage; adding that it was a proper Cha Cha. Bruno said that Vanessa finished her lines and maintained her posture. Outscoring her hubby, Vanessa and Maks scored 21 points for their dance.
Actor Frankie Muniz and season 19 DWTS champion Witney Carson paired up for a Foxtrot. Tom noted that Frankie looked like he was having a ball out there. Saying that she was screaming like Frankie was in a boy band, Carrie Ann said that there was something so beautiful about the performance; adding that it was honest, elegant, vulnerable and fantastic. Frankie and Witney scored 19 points for their dance.
Host Tom Bergeron noted what a fun season premiere.
WWE wrestling star Nikki Bella and newly blonde Artem performed a Tango that included Nikki body slamming and pinning Artem at the end. Tom said it was a great finish but noted they almost had half of an elimination on the first night. Len said that he liked the body contcat in hold but told Nikki to stop looking down. Nikki and Artem scored 20 points for their dance.
Former NBA and Los Angeles Lakers star Derek Fisher pairs up with Sharna Burgess for a basketball themed – in Lakers purple and gold – Salsa that brought some rousing applause from the crowd and golden pompoms. Bruno noted that the dance was tailor made to make Derek shine. Calling it a great debut, Bruno said that Derek commanded the dance. Derek and Sharna scored 18 points for their dance.
Paralympian and ESPN reporter Victoria Arlen pairs up with Valentin Chmervoskiy for a Cha Cha. Victoria was paralyzed for 10 years and learned to walk again last year. Victoria said that she has no feeling in her legs. After the dance Tom said, “look what you just did.” Carrie Ann said that she has seen some incredible routines over the years but that was one of the most joyous routines she has ever seen; adding that Victoria had incredible balance, great leg work that was crisp and clean, and she couldn’t wait to see what the next 10 weeks would bring. Victoria and Val scored 19 points for their dance.
In the final dance of the night Mark Ballas returns after a year away from the show performing in “Jersey Boys” on Broadway to partner with electric violin virtuoso Lindsey Stirling. Stirling, who has appeared on the show as a performer several times, noted that it is much scarier to be on the other side dancing. After the dance Tom kept saying wow; adding who needs a violin and it was some great stuff. Len said that he expected for Lindsey to be great at the lyrical dances like the Foxtrot; adding that she came out and was crisp and clean with great leg action. Len said that for him it was the dance of the night and it was fantastic. Tying the highest score of the night, Lindsey and Mark scored 22 points for their dance.
