Wild Finish to Start Round 2 of Playoffs in Charlotte

Round two of the playoffs for the Monster Energy Cup Series begins this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the Bank of America 500.

For the next three races 12 drivers will be competing for the right to move on to the next round and the championship.

There were a number of crashes during practice, but only Dale Earnhardt Jr had to move to a backup car.

When qualifying began, several teams were still trying to make their way through pre-qualifying inspection.

After making three visits through the inspection line, Dale Earnhardt Jr made it on to the track to make a qualifying run with less than a minute left in the first round.

After three rounds of qualifying Denny Hamlin wins the pole and will bring the field down for the green flag.

Stages one and two of the race are 90 laps each with stage three lasting 154 laps for a total of 334 laps around the mile and a half track.

Due to all of the rain on Saturday, NASCAR has called for a competition caution around lap 35. Drivers may come down pit road for service but cannot add any fuel to their cars until after the competition caution.

Denny Hamlin brings the field down for the green flag start of the race and gets out in front for the lead.

Lap five the leaders get three wide but Denny Hamlin holds on to the lead with Kevin Harvick in second and Chase Elliott in third.

Lap eight Kevin Harvick challenges Denny Hamlin for the lead but Hamlin holds on to the lead.

Lap 12 Denny Hamlin continues to lead the field but Kevin Harvick is only a quarter of a second behind.

Lap 16 Denny Hamlin is still leading the field.

Lap 22 Denny Hamlin continues to lead the race with Kevin Harvick right on his bumper.

Lap 26 there are 34 cars on the lead lap with all 40 drivers still on the track.

Lap 28 Deny Hamlin has pulled out to a lead of nearly half a second on Kevin Harvick.

Lap 32 Kevin Harvick again challenges Denny Hamlin for the lead but Hamlin holds on to the lead as the competition caution approaches.

Lap 35 NASCAR throws the competition caution with 32 cars on the lead lap.

After getting pit road service, Kyle Larson wins the race off of pit road and moves up six places after missing his pit box and getting no service.

Denny Hamlin brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 41 and gets out in front of Kevin Harvick for the lead.

Chase Elliott passed Denny Hamlin to take over the lead of the race on lap 42.

Ryan Newman brings out the caution flag on lap 44 when he spins out and has significant damage to his car. There were flames coming out the right side of Newman’s car. Clint Bowyer also has some damage to his car.

Chase Elliott brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 52 with Elliott getting out in front but Kevin Harvick challenges Elliott and passes to take the lead.

Lap 55 Kevin Harvick has already pulled out to a lead of a half of a second on Chase Elliott.

Lap 57 there are 31 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 58 Kevin Harvick’s lead is over a second on Chase Elliott.

Erik Jones had a broken rear shock mount on his car.

After his pit road misque, Kyle Larson has moved up to the top 10.

Lap 63 Kevin Harvick has a lead of over a second and a half over Chase Elliott. After starting 18th, Jamie McMurray is in third.

The last car on the lead lap, Joey Logano has a hole in the nose of his car. The crew made some repairs, but Logano is still having handling issues with his car.

Lap 74 Kevin Harvick is in the lead, followed by Chase Elliott and Jamie McMurray. Kyle Larson has moved into the top five running the fastest laps on the track.

AJ Allmendinger reports a clicking noise in his car, but doesn’t know where it is coming from.

Lap 80 there are 30 cars on the lead lap. Kevin Harvick has a lead of nearly two seconds on Chase Elliott.

Lap 85 Kevin Harvick has pulled out to a lead of two seconds on Chase Elliott. Martin Truex Jr is having some handling issues and may not get any stage points – something that hasn’t happened since the Daytona race I July.

Jamie McMurray brings the field down for the green flag start of stage two on lap 98 and is running nose to nose with Kyle Busch with Kyle taking the lead.

Lap 99 Kevin Harvick comes flying up and challenges Kyle Busch for the lead. The two drivers run nose to nose with Kyle Busch holding on to the lead.

Lap 102 the top three are Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Larson.

Lap 107 Kyle Busch is still out in front of the field with Kevin Harvick only a quarter of a second behind.

Dale Earnhardt Jr reports a very loose condition in his car.

Michael McDowell spins out in a single car incident on lap 117 and brings out the caution flag.

Choosing the outside lane, Kyle Busch brigs the field down for the green flag restart on lap 121. Jamie McMurray got loose on the restart and brushed the wall.

Kevin Harvick passes Kyle Busch to take over the lead.

NBC broadcasters report that there is rain in the area.

Kasey Kahne makes an unscheduled trip down pit road with a flat tire.

Lap 125 Kevin Harvick has pulled out to a one second lead on Kyle Busch.

Lap 130 the top three are Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Matt Kenseth.

Lap 131 there are 28 cars on the lead lap.

Kevn Harvick’s lead over Kyle Busch is down to less than one second.

The caution flag comes out for the fifth time on lap 137 when Kyle Busch gets into the wall. Busch is one of the drivers who hit the wall during practice on Friday but did not have to move to the backup car.

Kyle Busch is on the five minute clock. The team must make all the repairs they can withing a five minute time limit and make minimum speed on the track in order to continue in the race.

Kevin Harvick brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 141. The drivers get three wide across the field. Martin Truex Jr is riding the high groove.

Kyle Busch has achieved minimum speed but is a lap down. He can now make further repairs to his car without a time limit.

Lap 146 Kevin Harvick has a lead of over a second on Chase Elliott with Matt Kenseth in third.

Lap 151 there are 28 cars on the lead lap with three drivers off the track.

Kevin Harvick has a lead of over a second on Chase Elliott with Matt Kenseth in third, Martin Truex Jr in fourth, and Kyle Larson in fifth.

Lap 163 Kevin Harvick has a lead of nearly two second on Chase Elliott.

Trevor Bayne has also brushed the wall.

Gray Gaulding made an unscheduled trip down pit road with a flaming right front tire.

The seventh caution flag comes out on lap 266 when David Ragan and Danica Patrick wreck. Ragan got loose and began moving down the track and Danica had nowhere to go.

In only one lap, Kyle Larson has pulled out to a lead of over half a second on Martin Truex Jr.

Sixty to go and there are 16 cars on the lead lap.

With 58 laps to go Kyle Larson has pulled out to a lead of a second and a half over Martin Truex Jr.

Kyle Busch spins out bringing out the eighth caution flag of the race.

Even though they were on pit road only a few laps ago, many of the drivers are coming down pit road for fresh tires and to pack the fuel cell.

Martin Truex Jr wins the race off of pit road. Kyle Larson had issues again with his pit stop and is out of the top 10. Jimmie Johnson also had trouble during their pit stop.

Kyle Busch reported to his team that after the race he will need some medical attention.

Fifty to go, Martin Truex Jr has a half second lead on Kevin Harvick with Jamie McMurray in third one second back.

With 45 laps to go, Martin Truex Jr holds on to his half second lead on Kevin Harvick. There are 24 cars on the lead lap.

Forty to go, Martin Truex Jr has a half second lead on Kevin Harvick. The top two drivers have pulled away from the rest of the field four seconds behind.

Kevin Harvick has closed Martin Tuex Jr’s lead to under half a second with 29 laps remaining in the race.

With 27 laps to go, Martin Truex Jr has increased his lead over Kevin Harvick to nearly a second as the drivers navigate lapped traffic.

With only 20 laps to go, Martin Truex Jr’s lead over Kevin Harvick is down to under half a second, Chase Elliott is in third over seven seconds behind.

Austin Dillon makes an unscheduled pit stop.

Fifteen to go and Martin Truex Jr holds on to his lead over Kevin Harvick. The lead is now one second.

Ten to go and Martin Truex Jr’s lead is over a second over Kevin Harvick.

The ninth caution flag of the race comes out with only nine laps remaining in the race for debris on the track.

Martin Truex Jr wins the race off of pit road. Denny Hamlin gained four spots while Kevin Harvick lost four spots.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr was caught speeding on pit road.

Choosing the bottom lane, Martin Truex Jr brings the field down for the green flag restart with only four laps remaining in the race. Truex jumps out for the lead.

Kurt Busch brings out the tenth caution flag of the race when he gets into the back of Kyle Larson and spins out. The caution will take the race into overtime and a green/white/checker finish.

Chris Buescher takes a spin through the grass as the cars cross the finish line.

Chase Elliott comes in second for his sixth second place finish of the season. His father Bill Elliott came in second nine times before he won his first Cup race.

Kyle Busch is laying on the grass as medical personnel see to him. He had warned the crew that he would need some help after the race.
