Former National Security Advisor Expected to Enter Guilty Plea

UPDATE: As expected, former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn entered a guilty plea for a single count of making false statements. The guilty plea suggests he is cooperating with Mueller’s Russian investigation in exchange for leniency.

December 1, 2017 President Trump’s former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn is expected to plead guilty to making false statements to the FBI on Friday morning. Flynn has arrived at the courthouse but did not speak to reporters as he entered the building.

According to official court documents unsealed Friday morning, Flynn is scheduled to appear at a plea hearing in a Washington D.C. court at 10:30 a.m., according to the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

According to CBS News, an indictment filed by the special counsel Robert Mueller’s office states that Michael Flynn “falsely stated” on December 29, 2016, that he did not ask Kislyak “to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia that same day,” and that Flynn did not recall Kislyak “subsequently telling him that Russia had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request.”

In February, U. S. intelligence officials told the White House that an investigation determined Flynn discussed sanctions imposed by then President Barack Obama with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the weeks before President Trump’s inauguration in January. After Flynn assured Vice President, Mike Pence that he did not discuss sanctions with the Russian ambassador, Pence was said to be livid after publicly defended him based on his word. Flynn later apologized to V. P. Pence for lying to him.

During the 2016 Presidential Campaign, retired Army Gen. Flynn — considered one of the most respected military intelligence officers of his generation, raised eyebrows when he publicly aligned himself with then presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Flynn was the only national security figure of his rank and experience to do so.

Flynn had become a very controversial figure in recent years for falsely claiming that Democrats in several states voted to impose Shariah law at the state and local level. Sharia law is the religious law governing the members of the Islamic faith and not the law in any U.S. state.
