Fact Checking President Trump’s State of the Union Address

Tuesday night, President Donald Trump addressed the nation with the annual State of the Union Address. The speech hit upon the raising economy, the tax cut that was passed which has given many businesses chances to give back to employees and the lower unemployment rate. The President’s speech was long but it hit upon many of the points, not only his base would like, but to conservative Republicans across the nation.

The President’s speech was written by White House Senior Policy Advisor Stephen Miller, who has been an advocate for changes in the immigration policies of the United States with this speech highlighting some of those proposals. The GOP plan would change the way immigrants come into our country. For one, chain migration would end with immediate family only, husbands, wives and their children. There would not be an exception for cousins, grandparents or other relatives. The speech did call for unity within the two parties but it seems doubtful when the President’s speech touted the criminal activity of some immigrants over the accomplishments of many.

The President’s speech has largely been a hit. There were some glaring problems. Errors in the speech which can be clarified through fact checking such as:

“Just as I promised the American people from this podium 11 months ago, we enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history.”
The statement is false. The tax cut plan was not the largest in history which the President has stated many, many times. If you take this tax cut and adjust it for inflation it is the 4th largest since 1940.

The next claim to be checked is the plan to end the visa lottery system. The President stated that the visa lottery system is a “a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of American people.”

This is not the fact. Those who are picked for the lottery system are still vetted as any other immigrant is. The immigrants must meet education and work experience requirements just as any other applicant must.

There were positives in the speech. Trump stated that,
“Since we passed tax cuts, over 3 million workers have gotten tax cut bonuses — many of them thousands and thousands of dollars.”

It is true that the tax cut given to corporations has given major corporations the initiative to release many bonuses to US workers. Some bonuses were given in the form of a bonus check of $1000 but others were even given stock in the companies that could be even more valuable.

One of the statements by the President that was true and was one that led to thunderous, long applause, was that ISIS is on the run. The President stated that “One year later, I am proud to report that the coalition to defeat ISIS has liberated very close to 100 percent of the territory just recently held by these killers in Iraq and Syria.”
Beating back the terrorist group ISIS was one of the priorities of this President and others but the results are being seen on President Trump’s watch.
