UPDATE 2: 17 confirmed dead in #Florida high school shooting.
UPDATE: The Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter that a suspect has been apprehended. Authorities say the shooter, Nicholas Cruz, 18, was a former student at the high school.
February 14, 2018 Law enforcement officials in Parkland, Florida are on the scene of an active shooter situation on the campus of a high school on Wednesday. There are multiple injuries reported and authorities say the shooter is still at large.
A gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School located at 5901 Northwest Pine Island Road in Parkland Wednesday afternoon. News station helicopters show multiple people being loaded into ambulances. Dozens of police vehicles and officers in SWAT gear and one tank can be seen from aerial footage.
Local News station WSVN reports that at least 20 people were injured in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, citing officials with Margate Fire Rescue. The Broward Sheriff’s Office official Twitter account sent out a tweet Wednesday, just before 3 p.m., calling the shooting an “active shooter” situation.
Increasingly, the rise in school shooting incidents in the United States have sparked heated debate over gun violence, zero tolerance policies, and gun control. In January, a shooting at a Benton, Kentucky High School left two dead and 17 more injured. Earlier the same week, a 15-year-old girl was shot inside the cafeteria at Italy High School in Italy, Texas. Other recent school shootings occurred in Aztec, New Mexico and Rancho Tehama, California.
