Police Respond to Active Shooter at Texas High School

May 18, 2018 Texas police officers responded to calls of an active shooter situation on Friday at a Santa Fe High School located southeast of Houston. All schools in the district have been placed on lockdown. Santa Fe High School’s Vice Principal said the suspected shooter has been taken into police custody.

KTRK News in Houston reports that witnesses told reporters a shooting took place in an art class at Santa Fe High School near Galveston, Texas. One student said in a telephone interview that a gunman came into her first-period art class and started shooting. The student says she saw one girl with blood on her leg as the class evacuated the room.

The Santa Fe Independent School District confirms an unknown number of people are injured from a shooting this morning at Santa Fe High School. An ATF spokesperson said agents are currently en route to Santa Fe High School.

The Sante Fe High School shooting comes on the eve of the thirty year anniversary of one of the first modern mass school shootings happened on May 20, 1988 at Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka, Illinois. ABC News in Chicago reports that since the Winnetka school shooting, 369 people have been killed in 153 fatal school shootings in the United States.
